The Ultimate Safari Experience: Discover Asilia’s Magical Migration Camps
Safari accommodation exists on a spectrum. On the one hand, there are permanent brick-and-mortar lodges, often with a swimming pool, while on the other, there is the simplest fly camp, featuring a small canvas tent and a bag of water hung in a tree for a shower.
Somewhere in the centre of the spectrum, you’ll find our migration camps, which aim to strike a balance somewhere in between, offering unparalleled game viewing with impeccable service and all the comforts of home.
Both camps feature spacious guest tents complete with en suite bathrooms and a well-appointed lounge designed to offer a comfortable environment to relax after lunch while enjoying the peace of your surroundings.

The magic of mobility
Our migration camps are renowned for their unique mobility, ensuring our guests are always in the heart of the Great Migration action. The term’ migration‘ takes on a double meaning here, as the entire camp also migrates along with the herds, adding an adventurous twist to your safari experience.
Both Ubuntu and Olakira camps change their locations twice a year, migrating from the nutrient-rich grasslands of the southern Serengeti to the banks of the Mara River in the northern Serengeti, home to the notorious river crossings.
Witnessing the migration from one of these strategically located camps can transform your safari experience from ordinary to extraordinary.
Great Migration Recap
Each year, millions of wildebeest and zebra undertake a circular journey around the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, following the seasonal rainfall in the pursuit of green pastures and rewarding grazing. Despite the continuous circular motion, there are two distinct periods of the year when the herds mass together dramatically, creating mega-herds of hundreds of thousands of animals. These two periods are what our migration camps aim to intercept.

Comfort Under Canvas
Yes, we use the word ‘camp.’ Yes, you’ll stay in a tent. But there’s no stooping to enter your tent through a flap, no sleeping on the ground on a plastic sheet, and no realizing you forgot the tent pegs or having to wander off behind a bush to answer nature’s call.
While the migration camps offer a more pared-back comfort than our more luxurious permanent camps like Sayari and Naboisho, they are by no means rustic or bare bones. Instead, think comfortable mattresses, quality linen, flushing toilets and hot water, incredible meals (how do they do it in the middle of nowhere?!), and friendly staff to cater to your every need.

Authentic Wildlife Encounters
Because Ubuntu and Olakira move with the migration (and the predators and optimistic species that follow this wildlife phenomenon), you’re guaranteed an incredible wildlife experience.
You’re positioned to see the dramatic river crossings in their northernmost locations. While in the south, you can witness the magical experience of thousands of wildebeest giving birth on the plains within days of each other.
But your wildlife experience doesn’t end when you return to camp after your afternoon game drive. At night, guests lie warmly tucked in their comfortable beds with just the canvas between them and the untamed African wilderness. With the herds of the migration nearby, you’ll likely be serenaded by the grunting of the gnus and the occasional hyena calling off in the distance.
If you choose to stay at Olakira, your tent is situated on an elevated platform with wooden floors, complete with an enclosed veranda in insect-proof mesh. The bed is on wheels and can be easily rolled across the smooth wooden floor into the enclosed veranda space, allowing for a star-bed experience from within the comfort of your tent. Surrounded by grunting wildebeest at night grazing just metres from your tent, this will be an experience to remember.

Eco-conscious Experience
Both Olakira Migration Camp and Ubuntu Migration Camp have been designed with a strong focus on eco-consciousness. They can be packed up and moved twice a year, leaving behind nothing more than a flattened patch of grass that will bounce back within a few weeks as though the camp was never there at all. This responsible approach to safari accommodation is something we take great pride in.
In addition, the migration camps are fully solar-powered with backup generators if needed.
Including a stay at one of our migration camps in your itinerary will enhance your Great Migration safari and offer a classic safari experience that you’ll remember fondly for years to come. Let us help you plan your dream safari.
